Seven species of red algae from the waters of eastern Long Island, New York were analyzed for their sterol content. The species studied were: Agardhiella tenera, Ahnfeltia plicata, Chondrus crispus, Corallina officinalis^Cystoclonium purpureum var. cirrhosum, Gracilaria foliifera, und Palmaria palmata. Sargassum sometimes forms floating masses and prefers wave-sheltered areas. It was also reported that galactan sulfate (GS), isolated from Agardhiella tenera, displays an effective control against HIV-1 and HIV-2. GS blocked the adhesion of virus to cell, in addition to the attachment of gp120 on CD4+ T cell receptor to HIV-1 gp120. Macroalgae found in estuarine and marine environments.
